1. What is Aramid Fiber?
Aramid fibers are a class of heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibers, widely used in protective clothing, aerospace, military, and industrial applications. The most common aramid types are:

These fibers have exceptional thermal stability, high tensile strength, and chemical resistance. However, their very same properties โ tight molecular structure and high crystallinity โ make them extremely difficult to dye with conventional methods.
2. Why is Aramid Fiber Difficult to Dye?
Unlike cotton or polyester, aramid fibers present unique dyeing challenges that require specialized solutions:
2.1 Tight Crystalline Structure
Aramid fibers have a highly ordered, crystalline molecular structure with strong hydrogen bonds between polymer chains. This tightly packed structure leaves almost no space for dye molecules to penetrate at normal dyeing temperatures (100โ130°C).
2.2 High Glass Transition Temperature
The glass transition temperature (Tg) of aramid fibers is very high โ around 160โ170°C. Below this temperature, the fiber structure is rigid and dye molecules cannot diffuse in. Traditional dyeing methods simply do not work.
2.3 Without Carriers: Ring Dyeing Problem
When dyeing aramid without specialized carriers, dye molecules can only attach to the fiber surface, resulting in ring dyeing โ the surface appears dyed but the fiber core remains undyed. This causes:
- Poor wash fastness (color washes out quickly)
- Poor rub fastness (color transfers easily)
- Unacceptable color depth and uniformity
- Safety risks in protective applications (colored fibers must maintain integrity)
Key Insight
Without an aramid dyeing carrier, it is virtually impossible to achieve satisfactory color penetration in aramid fibers for commercial production. This is why specialized dyeing carriers are essential in aramid fiber processing.
3. What is an Aramid Dyeing Carrier?
An aramid dyeing carrier (also called dyeing assistant or swelling agent) is a chemical auxiliary that temporarily modifies the aramid fiber structure to enable dye penetration. Here is how it works:
3.1 Fiber Swelling Mechanism
The aramid dyeing carrier molecules penetrate the fiber and locate between polymer chains. They lower the glass transition temperature (Tg) from 160โ170°C down to 130โ135°C โ a critical difference that makes dyeing possible.
3.2 How Carriers Enable Dyeing
- Penetration โ Carrier molecules diffuse into the fiber at 60โ80°C
- Swelling โ At 130โ135°C, the fiber structure swells and temporary pores open
- Dye Diffusion โ Dye molecules diffuse into the fiber core through these pores
- Fixation โ Upon cooling, the dye is locked inside the fiber and the carrier is exhausted with the bath

Traditional benzyl alcohol dyeing requires 160โ165°C and high carrier concentrations (4โ8 g/L). Modern aramid dyeing carriers like DNK-001 and CAD-45 offer:

How to Choose?
If your production focuses on dark and medium shades (military, industrial protective clothing), choose DNK-001.
If your production focuses on light, pastel, or fluorescent shades (fashion aramid, safety vests, high-visibility clothing), choose CAD-45.
For dual production lines, many mills use both carriers โ they can be applied sequentially or in separate baths as needed.
5. Aramid Dyeing Application Process
Follow these steps for optimal results with DNK-001 or CAD-45:
Prepare Bath
Fill vessel with water, add 2โ4 g/L carrier (DNK-001 or CAD-45), adjust pH to 3.0โ4.0 with acetic acid
Load Fabric
Load aramid fabric/yarn into the dyeing vessel. Standard liquor ratio: 1:8 to 1:12
Carrier Exhaustion
Heat to 60โ80°C and hold for 15โ20 minutes to allow carrier molecules to penetrate the fiber
Dyeing
Raise temperature to 130โ135°C and hold for 45โ60 minutes for deep shades, 30โ45 min for medium shades
Rinse & Neutralize
Cool slowly, rinse with warm water, neutralize pH with soda ash if needed
Fixation
Apply fixing agent if required. Dry at 120โ140°C. Final fastness depends on dye chemistry
Important Tips
- Always pre-test on a small sample before bulk production
- Use acid-resistant equipment (stainless steel 316L or above)
- Do not exceed 140°C โ risk of fiber degradation
- For mixed shade production, exhaust the light shade first (CAD-45) before dark shade (DNK-001)
- Store carriers in cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
